Dr. Charles “Pete” Peterson
Dr. Peterson has vast knowledge on the organization of soft sediment benthic communities in estuaries and lagoons. He also conducts research in paleoecology, invertebrate fisheries management, estuarine habitat evaluation and barrier island ecology. Some of his current research includes: the Sargassm ecosystem in the Gulf Stream off North Carolina, the processes in the Northern Gulf of Alaska ecosystem, community patterns at deep-sea hydrothermal vents, ecosystem functions of oyster reef habitat in N.C. and methods for expanding the scientific basis for ecosystem management in the coastal zone. He has helped train and facilitate the careers of professor, researchers, teachers, natural resource managers and Non Governmental Organization conservation advocates and has published 240 papers. Dr. Peterson has greatly helped to pioneer the design of the state's oyster sanctuaries.
