Dr. Piehler's research focuses on coastal ecology and biogeochemistry. Over the past decade he has worked to quantify and explain the impacts of oysters on coastal nutrient cycling. The National Science Foundation, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and North Carolina Sea Grant fund this research. Dr. Piehler also serves on scientific advisory panels for governments, non-government organizations and industry. The results of his work have been translated into curriculum for undergraduate and graduate students he and others have taught.
