Dr. William (Bill) Kirby-Smith
Dr. Kirby-Smith's research interests can best be described as a broad approach to marine ecology. His previous research projects pertained to community ecology in aquatic systems extending from the interface between rivers and estuaries to the edge of the continental shelf. He also has conducted research in applied ecology, specifically the restoration of aquatic systems (e.g. marshes, agricultural ditches, storm water drainage systems) at the freshwater/saltwater interface and in the ecology of fecal coliform bacteria as they impact management of shellfish resources. He has a number of collaborative projects with the NC State University Agricultural Extension Service and with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill focused on the improvement of estuarine water quality. Currently Dr. Kirby-Smith monitors water quality for the New River Farm Reserve.
