Jim Swartzenberg and his wife Bonnie recently retired from the oyster and clam aquaculture business. Their company, J&B Aqua Food, was a 100-acre oyster and clam farm in Stump Sound. Mr. Swartzenberg has successfully completed several N.C. Fisheries Resource Grant research projects including two, which developed and demonstrated the chub system of growing cultured oysters on a commercial scale and the setting of oyster larvae on microchips on the farm. Mr. Swartzenberg is the co-founder and past president of the N.C. Shellfish Growers Association. He has 25 years of experience in oyster mariculture and has worked extensively to develop the cultured oyster fishery in North Carolina. He has taught four Shellfish Lease Management courses at Coastal Carolina Community College. He has extensive experience in the public relations, media relations and public information fields.
